چکیده

Fractional share models are used to reason about how multiple actors share ownership of resources. We examine the decidability and complexity of reasoning over the “tree share” model of Dockins et al. using first-order logic, or fragments thereof. We pinpoint a connection between the basic operations on trees union t, intersection u, and complement and countable atomless Boolean algebras, allowing us to obtain decidability with the precise complexity of both first-order and existential theories over the tree share model with the aforementioned operations. We establish a connection between the multiplication operation ./ on trees and the theory of word equations, allowing us to derive the decidability of its existential theory and the undecidability of its full first-order theory. We prove that the full first-order theory over the model with both the Boolean operations (t, u, ) and the restricted multiplication operation (./ with constants on the right hand side) is decidable via an embedding to tree-automatic structures. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation, F.3.1 Specifying and Verifying and Reasoning about Programs, F.4.1 Mathematical Logic, F.4.3 Formal Languages

The Complexity of Graded-CTL⋆

Recently, complexity issues related to the decidability of temporal logics, such as μ-calculus and Computation Tree Logic, augmented with graded modalities, have been investigated. Of particular interest is the problem of stating whether the complexity depends on the representation chosen for the constant values grading the formulas. Kupfermann, Sattler and Vardi proved that graded mu-calculus ...

Complexity, decidability and completeness

We give resource bounded versions of the Completeness Theorem for propositional and predicate logic. For example, it is well known that every computable consistent propositional theory has a computable complete consistent extension. We show that, when length is measured relative to the binary representation of natural numbers and formulas, every polynomial time decidable propositional theory ha...

Decidability and Complexity of Definability within the Class of All Partitions

This paper is devoted to exploring modal definability of firstorder sentences and first-order definability of modal formulas. It investigates the decidability and the complexity of these problems within the class of all partitions.

On the Computational Complexity of Read once Resolution Decidability in 2CNF Formulas

In this paper, we analyze 2CNF formulas from the perspectives of Read-Once resolution (ROR) refutation schemes. We focus on two types of ROR refutations, viz., variable-once refutation and clause-once refutation. In the former, each variable may be used at most once in the derivation of a refutation, while in the latter, each clause may be used at most once. We show that the problem of checking...

On Combining Theories with Shared Set Operations

We explore the problem of automated reasoning about the nondisjoint combination of theories that share set variables and operations. We prove a combination theorem and apply it to show the decidability of the satisfiability problem for a class of formulas obtained by applying propositional operations to quantified formulas belonging to several expressive decidable logics.
